Winter Solstice Eve

Pictures taken this afternoon as we enter the longest night of the year

I look forward to six months of lengthening days and the retreat of the season's darkness. I don't know if I could tolerate the total winter darkness of the far north. Yesterday I wished for sunlight and sleep. Today we were blessed with the low winter sun's warmth as it created icicles and added some warm colour to the white, snow covered earth.

Now for the sleep...

  2. Interesting how some say it is the longest night, and others the shortest day... Hmm... glass half full / half empty... I wonder who is the optimist?

  3. What beautiful photos! Very much capture the feeling there. As a native northerner (though not as far north as you are), I enjoyed the icicles photo...brings back memories.

Have a wonderful Christmas and all good things in 2008! I look forward to seeing many more wonderful posts like this one.

  6. The trouble is that the return of the warmth lags behind the return of the sun to some degree. Anyway, I wish you Merry Christmas now in case I don't get back.

  14. Lynne- You are further north than we are! Wishing you a light-filled Christmas.

Jennifer- I guess it depends if you are a day or night person. I am a morning person, so my "longest night" was not an optimistic observation.

Peggy- Thanks. We are having a truly white snow and ice Christmas!

CS- You are way north. Glad you get some light. Yes, our visit is enjoyable and going by too quickly.

Monarch- I agree, it has been getting darker for a long time... the change is welcome for sure.

AC- January usually brings our coldest winter weather, but the sun does make a little difference, especially through the windows. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Mary- Enjoy your Christmas. Hope you have a little nip in the air!

Mary C- Thanks, and all the blessings of the season to you too.

Jean- I enjoy every sunny day because they are so infrequent at this time of year. Pictures just aren't right without good light. I wish you a truly wonderful Christmas.

Mary from ON...I am wishing all my Marys a Merry Christmas :-)Have a good time with your family.

Larry- Our seasons do add interest to the year, and I don't mind the cold as much as the dark. Here's looking toward spring.

Jayne- Hope you have a great Christmas with your birds and Sam and hubby!

Laura- I know it is getting lighter when I go to and come home from work in the light...can't wait!
