Sky Watch at 1630 h

January 9, 2009 at 1630 h

I drive by this hill every day at 1630 h on the way home from work. This old landfill site, locally known as Mount Trashmore has been graded and fixed up as a sledding hill. It is the highest point of land, albeit man-made, at our end of the city and has been a reference for the position of the sun at this time of day.

Our days are gradually lengthening and sunset has moved from 1652 h to 1725 h over the month of January, a gain of 33 minutes at the end of the day. Each day is a little brighter on my journey home. Even though the air temperatures have remained very cold, the sun is stronger and warmer.

Sun dog and high clouds

These three pictures show the progression of light over the past three weeks with all photos taken at the same time of day over Mount Trashmore.

Spring is on a slow march, coming our way!

  8. Mount Trashmore is certainly a clever name. Love it!

Nice sky shots. I was just thinking the other day about how our days are now visibly longer than in late December. Isn't it wonderful?

  9. Ruth--what a wonderful combination--the blaze of the sunset sky and the cool white of the snowy hill.

  10. Who would have ever thought that a heap of trash could bring hours and hours of entertainment.

    Beautiful pictures!
I do like winter, but I go to work and come home from work in the dark. The best part of the day is spent locked up in an office building. So I'm happy that the days are getting longer and spring will soon be here.

  19. What a nice transformation from trash heap to winter skyline.
I've noticed the gradual increase in the afternoon daylight. It's encouraging on these cold, wintry days.

  32. Blue and orange and pink and white. All such lovely colours in these images. The second one is my favourite as there is such drama in that picture. Love how you have captured just the snow and the sky there. Simplicity is beauty.
