Simplicity

October is a feast for the eyes with extravagant rich colours, bountiful harvests and big fall skies. I have taken many pictures this month and in reviewing them noticed a few which portrayed a simple, peaceful beauty. I have matched them with some quotations about simplicity.

The best things in life are nearest:
Breath in your nostrils, light in your eyes,
flowers at your feet, duties at your hand,
the path of right just before you.

Robert Louis Stevenson

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back
and realize they were the big things.

Robert Brault

If you have a garden and a library,
you have everything you need.

Cicero

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Leonardo da Vinci

You can't force simplicity;
but you can invite it in by finding as
much richness as possible in the few things at hand.
Simplicity doesn't mean meagerness
but rather a certain kind of richness,
the fullness that appears when
we stop stuffing the world with things.

Thomas Moore

  6. Ruth,

This post is awesome. I enjoyed reading the quotes and your photos are beautiful.

I had to play catch-up again. Your post about the election, women's vote and your grandmother was very enjoyable. The photo of her with her friends is a treasure.

I must take a trip to Burlington, but I doubt it will be this weekend. Still feeling a little under the weather.

Enjoy the sights, sounds and fragrances of autumn, my friend. It has been beautiful in our area.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  7. I've seen the second half of the quote by Thomas Moore before and have always felt it true. Still, it's a struggle for me to stop stuffing my life with things.

  8. Beautiful and restful and the quotes are spot on. "'tis a gift to be simple, 'tis a gift to be free, 'tis a gift to come down where you ought to be."

I've been thinking a lot about contentment lately ... and somewhat along the vein of all of your quotes!

  12. These are great! I love the quotes by Cicero and Moore but trying to pick my favorite photo is really hard. The golden light on the brow of the hill captured me but then I saw the Amish buggy in front of the white cottage with the orange door. Striking! It would make a great painting! I love the last photo also and the one with the colored ivy hanging over the stone wall and...well, you can see, I really like them all!

  13. If it was only so simple: wherever I go there are vortexes of complexity trying to suck me in.

  16. Thanks for the comments. I think we all strive for more simplicity but society makes it very difficult. Like Robert says, "There are vortexes of complexity trying to suck us in."
